Adventures in the Italian Alps

My year started off in the Alps. I had two target locations to find wildlife, the Italian and Swiss Alps. I haven’t explored the Alps for wildlife before so I was excited to photograph bird of prey and herbivores. I started my journey in Gran Paradiso National Park. I stayed in a wonderful town nestled in valley. As soon as we arrived late at night, we saw a Chamois - one of the animals I wanted to photograph the most. In the morning, Juan and I headed to a mountain trek. However as soon as we arrived, we saw a large male Ibex with incredible horns. Shortly after spotting the ibex, I started to see chamois. It didn’t take long for me to start spotting them across the landscape. Once you see how one looks, your eyes become trained to spot more! We hardly got up the mountain at all as there was enough wildlife just in the first 100 metres.

The second day we met up with Italian ecologist and wildlife photographer Luca Eberle and we headed up another mountain. The conditions were very different to the previous day, and we had fluffy snowflakes all morning. The day prior, I got sun burned! We also saw some other species which was a nice treat including - crested tit, a female ibex, bearded vulture, golden eagle and crossbill.

To watch the full adventure, check out the video but for now, here are some of my favourite photos from the two days.
